Stanley Boxer

A remarkable work from the renowned painter, quite possibly his finest. Massive scale, with a Rothko-esque ethos, and an exemplary example of Boxer’s painterly nuanced style, it commands attention in a room of any size.

Boxer, an American (1926-2000) painter, decades as a major figure in the abstract movement, was also a sculptor, drawer and printmaker. Part of the Art Students League of New York, he had his own unique style. Among many regarded painters of the period, he stands apart as one who has the era’s time-stamp, but is imminently modern and up to date.

His most revered works, like the present example, are known for their substantial brushwork, texture, and use of color. One can see a “more painterly” Rothko on the canvas, especially true of this monumental work.

Known early on as a Color Field painter, a capable one at that, and not a moniker he embraced, his work evolved toward a journey into the paint itself. His works are at once a choreography of the paint and painter, nuanced, and full of variation and surprise. He sought to push the limits of the paint, the painter, and the finished art itself.

Like few painters, his work is viewed as both minimal and complexly beautiful. There exists a most delightful paradox in his work. Those with various aesthetic bents find joy in Boxer’s works.

Collections, exhibitions, solo shows, and museum placements (literally into the thousands) across the world, and far too many to list, speak to the significance and desirability of his work. The Guggenheim Fellowship is but one of numerous awards. Likewise, his place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Whitney, speak to his stature.

The present work, taken in the context of the whole body of his work, stands out among them all, in my view. Painterly, with a Rothko-esque minimal quality, highly textured, and full of color and nuance, it is, I think, the essential Stanley Boxer. It forms the bridge between periods of his work, finding foundational realities in the best of both ends of the spectrum.

Works of this size and subject matter from Boxer can easily trade above $75,000.00
